16 year old long hair cat- fur seems like it is getting thin on her back

Hello,

I've been reading some of your stories in this website and they are very informative. I have a female cat who is 16 years old and appears to be in very good health. She eats (like a little pig if I dont stop her) and drinks plenty of water.

I've been through the matting of her fur and so far have been lucky at getting them off myself. She hates that process. But lately I have noticed that the fur on her back seems to be getting thinner than the rest of her body. My husband thinks it's just me, but I can tell. She has a lot of fur that is thick, her back was never as thick as the rest of her body, but I am wondering if this is normal for a cat her age, or if I should take her to a vet. She is like a baby to us and of course is spoiled rotten.

I hope that I am worrying about nothing or something normal, but if you can give me any advice, I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you

Well it could be done to age but i would think that if it was going to happen that the fur would thin out all over. It could be a skin condition which will need to be checked by the vet or it could simply be over grooming. Your best bet is to get the skin looked at then at least you can put your mind to rest.
