do you know why my cat is rolling on her back and growling at nothing i thought she was having a night mare... but she was awake

Is she spayed? If not then this could be a symptom of being in heat. See this page for more on this

Apart from that she may have a irritation which she is trying to get at on her back which may be causing her distress and so she growls. But this is only a guess as without seeing her do it and knowing if there are other circumstances at play it is impossible to say.
