Cat not covering up litter

I have a 14 year old cat and she has recently stopped covering up her litter. We also have a 12 year old male but he covers his up. What can we do about her? they share the same little box. If we got a 2nd one, would that help at all?

Hi
There is two possible causes for this behavior.

either she is feeling anxious and wants her scent to mark her territory or she is suffering from a sort of dementia which old cats can sometimes.

please see this page for more on senior cat issues

However lets hope that it is just a behavioral issue down to something which has upset her. In which case getting a separate litter tray and placing it far away from the other litter tray could well help. It may simply be that for some reason the scent of the other cat in the litter tray is upsetting her and she is trying to claim the tray as her own ie sending the other cat a message to stay away.

you could also try using the cat attract litter which may help her to adjust to a new tray. See this page for more on this litter

best wishes Kate
