Cat pooping on furniture

Just out of the blue my male cat will poop on my furniture. He will be good for a long time, and then all of a sudden he feels the need to poop on my furniture. It is usally in the same spot. Can you help me figure out why. He is not lacking attention.

Hi
Cats use their poop as as cent marker sometimes and it is usually used at times when they feel very insecure about something. Now this could be something quite small, a new smell, a new item in the home, a strange cat in the area, strangers in the house etc etc the list can go on and on. of course some cats are more affected by things like this than others. the pooping is their way of making the home smell more like them and this helps to calm them down.

unfortunately some cats will always do this from time to time where as others can be trained out of it.

there is a litter re training method which helps them to regain their confidence and also gives you time to completely remove their scent from that area. The process is described here

This is a page about middening which you may also find of interest.
