Cat unhappy since getting outside

by Amanda

The other night my male cat escaped from my house and we didn't find him until the next morning! It's been almost a week and now he just keeps crying alot and sleeping all day! We bought him toys and tried all kinds of things but he stilll won't go back to the same cat he was before his great escape! What could be wrong?!

Hi
well there are many things which could be at play here. If he is not neutered then he may be looking for a mate. or he may have discovered other cats outside which he now feels that he needs to defend his territory.

i have always had cats that have been allowed outside and so have never had this problem but unfortunately once a cat has experienced freedom it can be rather hard to convince them not to want to go outside again.

If he is not neutered then having this done would help to calm him down. other than that you could try building him an enclosed area outside if you can or just continue to trya and make his inside world as stimulating as possible as the outside one.

He may be feeling rather anxious too after his trip outside and so you could try those calming plug in sprays for cats.

best wishes Kate

This was very helpful we are going to try to build something outside we were mainly scared of the big dogs around the neighborhood since he has been attacked before!
