Cat urinating in house after arrival of new baby

by Jeremy from Mi

My family has a 8-10 month old female cat. My wife has just come home from delivering our child. Since she has been back our cat has started urinalting in our bed everyday, sometimes in other beds around the house. What causes this? And is there a solution to this?

hi this is a common problem and in this case is caused by the cat becoming worried and unsettled my all the new smells and activity etc around the home due to the new baby.

the urinating is a way for a cat to make the house smell more like them which helps them feel safe and settled in their home. beds a re a common place for this to happen as they smell most strongly of you and you make them feel secure.

A period of readjustment is needed and this is best done with a week of confinement litter training. this process helps the cat settle down again and have less to worry about, i would also gently introduce the cat to things which smell of the baby so that they can become used to it.

The process for litter training is described here

best wishes Kate
