Cat's "Angry Chair"

by Maria

I have a particular chair that my cat likes to sit on -- we call it its "Angry Chair" because no matter what mood he was in before, after he jumps on it he becomes aggressive and tries to attack anyone that goes by. In fact, his routine is always the same -- he jumps on the back, pretends to scratch it (his last owner declawed him for some reason, but he seems to keep doing it purely out of instinct), then starts lashing his tail about and either attacks anyone nearby (sometimes alternating with purring and friendly behaviour, only to attempt to bite if someone pets him for too long), or hides under the chair in wait for someone to come by. Once he even knocked the glasses off my boyfriend. Otherwise, he is fairly easy going. Why does this particular chair appear to make him aggressive?

I have absolutely no idea. How strange.

The only thing I can think is either this chair has a particular smell which triggers a memory or instinct like going hunting etc. perhaps he has a very good imagination and uses this chair as his hunting post :)

I must admit to not having seen this before. perhaps someone else will comment who has.

best wishes Kate
