Cats with fleas for 9+ months

I have 2 cats with fleas since 11/10. we had 3 but 1 had to be put down after an overdose of flea shampoo(he may have been hyperthyroid) and the treatment of frontline did nothing but change the cats habits and appetites. I would like to know a safe chemical free way of expelling the fleas on top of vacuuming mopping and daily flea brushings that I give them?

Are you also treating your home for fleas too? It is importnat that you do both at the same time to prevent re infection.
