Diabetic cat urinating outside litter box

My mums cat was diagnosed diabetic just about 6 months ago and through insulin and a better diet it has started to improve, however, over the last couple of days he has been urinating and defecating in the kitchen, the pantry, everywhere apart from his litter tray. This is cleaned out every day so it`s not the fact that the tray is dirty. He is a house cat so he has always used the litter tray. Any ideas?
