do cats that are grieving run away?

we had to put our dear cat to sleep a few days ago and chose to do it at home. The vet suggested that other pets sniff around right afterwards so that they won't be waiting around, but will know what happened. Our other cat has not been seen since. She may have gotten outside, but she has never left our yard before. It has been 3 days. Could she be hiding in the house, without need for food and water? We have looked everywhere. If she is outside, could she come back on her own after a few days of hiding?

Hi
well it sounds like she may have been upset by the experience, it was probably the smell of the vet etc which caused the most concern for her. often cats will react by hiding or with aggression when they feel afraid or nervous.

She would definitely need to drink in three days but can go without food for longer. So i think that if she is in the house she is sneaking water without you noticing.

it is more likely i think that she has gotr outside. in which case she is probably having a big explore before coming home. this is not unusual and are able to find their own way home if they are able.

Please take a look at my page about lost cats for more information
