We just loved Gregory Maguire's novel and musical "Wicked," in which the Wicked Witch of the West's name is "Elphaba," in tribute to L. Frank Baum. Elphie is the heroine of the novel. When we adopted Elphaba, we just couldn't think of a good name for her. As a joke, we suggested Elphaba, and it stuck!
