why does my female cat who has been fixed continue to "hump" objects such as her cat bed

Well this can happen from time to time in some cats. It may be a hormonal thing where there could be an imbalance but more likely it is just instinct or a memory of a behavior.

i must admit it is more common in male neutered cats.

I wouldn't worry about it as it should only happen occasionally. If it happens a lot then i would take her to the vets in case there is a hormonal problem going on.
