Jake my cat needs help!

Jake is my 17 1/2 year old cat. He has lost alot of wieght and is frail. Lately he has been licking things like paper and/or books alot. He drinks alot of water and is not eating like he was a few months ago. He also is loosing his balance alot and falling over sometimes. His sister, Molley passed away 3 years ago on Feb. 14th due to kidney failure. I would like to know why is Jake licking and falling down so much? and Is this a sign of death closing in on him?

Hi Kevin, well Jake is rather old now so yes his symptoms could be signs of old age. however there could be an underlining illness which is causing him tom drink more etc, things like diabetes, thyroid problems and heart conditions can all cause these types of symptoms.

You really do need to take him to see a vet, he may be able to be treated successfully and give him a few more happy and contented years. The other possibility of course is that the vet may feel that he is suffering and if there is nothing that can be done for him, may suggest that helping him across the bridge may be the best option.

either way you need to know what the situation really is with your cat before you can decide how to help your cat in the best way possible.

i hope it is something that can be easily treated bets wishes Kate
