leaving cat in house

by Natasha
(Australia)

hello,

if me and my family go on a holiday for a long time (1 month ect.) then we'll ask a professional person to come and feed our
cat, or leave the cat with them.
But if we go on a holiday for about 1 week, is it ok to leave lots of food and water and cat-proof the whole house(so the cat can go everywhere)?or do I still have to have some1 to look after the cat
I'm a bit worried that if we go and there is not enough food and water, the cat could die.

Hi
you should absolutely not leave your cat for one week without someone coming in every day to give them fresh food, water and clean their litter tray. On top of this it is not good to leave a cat alone like this, cats are social animals and even if it is only for 15 minutes or so every day, someone should come and see them.

Ask a neighbour if they could come in every day to sort out the food etc and give the cat a little pet. This is what we do when we go away for a few days, as the cat knows the neighbour anyway and so is not afraid of them. we always bring our neighbour a little holiday gift as a thank you.

best wishes kate
