litter box issues

my cat likes to Poop in the litter box but Pees outsides the door then covers it with litter, he shares the box with another cat, we have put plastic under a towel to prevent odors from getting on the new carpet, but he wont stop. When we first moved he was doing good till we had a friend come over than he started this behavior again, not the first time.

Is there anything that can be done, I dont want to get rid of him or pay lots of money to replace the carpet when we do decide to move out some day

Yes try getting another litter tray and place it somewhere else. Cats often don't like sharing litter trays and sometimes out of the blue even though they may have shared one up to that point they they don't like the smell of the other cats urine. As you know they use their urine etc as scent marking their territory. So in this case he is marking the box as his.

i would also give your cat a period of litter training again. It helps to give them back some confidence again. See this page regarding the training
