My cat looked like she was going to give birth; But then didn't

My cat was meowing over and over again, so i made her a nesting spot in the closet. After about 15 min of her licking her vagina, I saw something red stick out, but then it went right back in her vagina. I dont know what it was. But after about 50 min, nothing has happened. She is asleep right now. What was that red stuff?
Also, if i had to take her to the vet but i didnt have much money to spend, would they give me any sort of deal?

Hi it may have been a plug of blood which usually comes out before birth.

It can take several hours for a cat to give birth so don't worry just yet. See these pages for more information
