My cat sits on my dog.
my cat has a very particular habit of sleeping on my dogs back, he's a cross between a rottweiler/alsatian and im just wondering if there is anything that causes this? (my partner thinks my cat has funny hormones)

I don't think there is a reason for this behavior apart from the fact that it is a lovely warm place to sleep.
I have known of several cats that like to do this. And as long as the dog is Ok with it then there's nothing to worry about.
