I have just been given a nine month old cat, she is very playful although she will not let us stroke her or even get anywhere near her how do we change this? i want her to eventually want cuddles with me and the family she absolutely gorgeous and i want the chance to care for her properly but she spits when i walk past her and all she want to do is attack me how do i get her to see we are trying to care for her?

Hi
There are several things to consider here.

Firstly you do not know what her first 9 months of life have been like. She may have experience abuse or may never have been properly socialized from birth. So her reaction to humans may be on the nervous side.

Also she is in a strange new home with new people, smells etc and so the fact that she is hissing etc is basically a sign of fear.

Don't worry though, time and lots of tlc will eventually help your cat settle in. But there are no guarantees what sort of personality your cat may have. Some cats love laps and cuddles and others hate it. just like we have own likes and dislikes, every cats personality is different.

I have a page about how to bond with your cat which you may find of further help. But don't try and rush these things, let your cat make the first move and things will work out better in the long run.
