My Poor Kitty- Poo Problems

I have a one year old cat that I adopted as a kitten. She is fixed, chipped, affectionate, and generally very happy.

For the past two months or so she has been pooping just outside of the litter box (occasionally). She will get into the box, and hang her butt out the door. It's very unusual- she never poops anywhere else in the house, just directly outside of the box.

Then this week, after I spent the weekend out of town, I came back to scoop the litter box. It had been two days since the box was scooped, and clumps of the litter had a white fuzzy substance on them. (Like what you would see on a bowl of soup that was left out for weeks). Does this indicate a problem with my cats health? Or is it an issue with the litter I am using?

I will be honest with you, it does sound strange. I have known mould to grow quite quickly and so it may just be something that your cat has eaten and passed which has still live bacteria etc which has grown mould. I wouldn't worry at this stage, keep an eye on the situation and if it happens again, try changing the litter as this may have caused the problem, if not then a trip to the vets may be called for.

As for the pooping just outside the box. It sounds to me like she is unfortunately just misjudging her position in the box. I would say that perhaps getting a larger box may help. I know my cat preferred a bigger box.

Best wishes Kate

Scooping the box
by: Anonymous

I usually scoop my cat box once every day. I was out of town for two days, and the room mate who was supposed to clean the box neglected to do so. It was after two days that I found the mold, so I guess it would have been lack of cleaning.

As far as the tote is concerned, that is a great idea, and I will definitely give it a shot.

Thank you for the idea!

how often do you flush your toilet???? I would say (without involving any CSI people) the WHITE STUFF is MOLD,good old fashoned MOLD. I have a 15 year old (mork) & I check & clean his box 4 times a day. If my toilet was over flowing I'd think there was a problem .

I have a couple cats that I rescued that did this very same thing.
I switched their box to a larger one and the problem was solved.
A GREAT litter box suggestion is this:
Buy one of those large CLEAR plastic storage containers that come with snap on lids.
Put litter in there and the cat has clear sides to see his surroundings while going to potty and he has a large area to go potty in without missing the box.The tall sides serve as a wall to keep kitty poo inside the box and not on the floor.
My cats MUCH prefer the large tote boxes for litter boxes to the standard low to the floor litter boxes.(Not to mention it saves on having to clean up kicked out litter on the floor).
Some people cut a circular hole in the lid and some cats like to jump in from that but as for my cats....they dont like the lid so I leave it off. It is a matter of cat choice.
Maybe this suggestion will help and it is not costly.
