new cat home from shelter

I adopted a 12 month old cat on sat. She seems very playful, and appears very healthy, however she sleeps for about 4-5 hours at a time. Is this normal. It's now 6:00pm. She has been sleeping since 1:30. Thank you- Jessica

Hi jessica
yes cats can sleep for quite long periods of time. However she may also have a slight virus which has knocked her for six. i had a cat who after her yearly flu jab would have 24 hours of flu like symptoms and she would sleep for about 10 hours straight.

You say you have adopted her from a shelter, they should have had her fully checked by a vet before she was allowed to come home with you. You may like to telephone them to make sure that this happened. If a check was not made then perhaps it would be a good idea to book her in with a vet for a general checkup to make sure that everything is ok. It is always good to get a full health check for any new pet.

best wishes Kate
