new cat won't eat

by Ms Lee

Hi Kate,

Two days ago, i adopted a one year old male neutered mixed breed. He hasnt been drinking or eating and has been hiding all the time. His previous owner has a no. of cats at home. According to the previous owner, he has never been out of the house before. What should i do now??

Answer by Kate
Well it will take the cat some time to adjust to his new home and he should be allowed to do this in his own time. So let him hide and give him some time and space to build up his confidence.

Make sure that fresh water and food are nearby for him to get too safely and when he he is hungry enough he will eat.

As for how to build his confidence with you after a few more days you could try bonding with him using the methods described on this page

The key here is to let the cat find his own way without too much interference from us. Some cats need more time than others to adjust.

best wishes Kate
