no meow

I just got a cat from a shelter, and it trys to meow but it just croaks. What could be the cause? Would it have been abused at all by it's former owners?

Hi
not all cats have a strong meow. Also some are very vocal whereas some are not.

it is always possible that he may have a sore throat. i have had cats who have had colds etc who have had croaky throats.

the shelter should have checked his health before they gave him to you but if the symptoms continue for a few more days, it may be advisable to take him to see a vet for a check up. Its always a good idea to start your relationship with a new pet with a full health check up.

I do have a page about cat flu, however this is a very severe form of cold and cats should be vaccinated against this when they get there jabs.

here is the page anyway

Hopefully he will get his mew back soon

best wishes Kate
