older cat afraid(?) of new kitten

We brought home a new kitten a few days ago & thought our 5 y.o female would love this new one after losing her best friend 3 months ago. The 5 y.o. hisses at the kitten & runs away. Both my husband & I work during the day & he said the kitten was hiding under the couch; possibly being trapped there by the older cat. What do we do? Any hints?

Your best option is to take them through the introduction process described here

It may take a little time and effort but it really helps to build confidence in both of the cats and helps them to get on in the future.
