Our Cat has ripped most of his hair out of his back side and leg area

Our male cat had ripped most of his hair out from his back side and leg area in the course of one night. We thought maybe we had tracked fleas into the house however our female cat has not showed any signs at all. Our male however is now completely bald on the back side with red splotches on some parts of skin. He seems otherwise pretty healthy although we have seen some fleas and are trying to take care of it. What do you recommend for his hind quarters as far as ointment or treatment of this area? We both lost our jobs recently and can not afford to take him to the vet right now.

Hi
well it could be one of two things or possibly both.

if your cat has fleas they may also be allergic to the flea bite. my cat was and this made her skin so uncomfortable that she scratched and scratched. this could also make the can very
anxious which can make a cat over groom as this can be comforting for them.

So i would make sure that your cat is flea free and make sure that you give them a monthly flea spot on treatment so that the fleas do not return.

I have a couple of pages which you might find of furter help. here
