Our cat has started pooing in the garden

by Chris
(Nottingham, UK)

Our cat, a seven year old male Ragdoll has suddenly started to poo in his own back garden. I hadn't noticed until today when I actually saw him doing it, when I went out there were about ten poos out there and two on the patio too. We have two cats and both have never ever pooed in their own gardens before. Is there any reason for this?

Thanks

Chris

Answer from Kate
I have owned cats all my life and my cats have always gone to the loo in their own garden. However they usually bury it.

If your cat is not burying it then he must be using it as a scent marker and this is called middening. Please read this page for more on what this is and why it happens.
