will my cats be unhappy if they do not have any pet toys to play with at home

All cats need to live in an environment that is full of things to do. if they can't go out and climb trees, chase leaves, hunt birds etc (hopefully not catching many) but generally being able to do all the natural instinctual things cats need to do then yes they will be unhappy, bored and very frustrated.

the idea of toys for indoor cats is to allow them to still be able to carry out all those instincts ie chasing, climbing etc.

You could always make some if you can't afford them.
