Thyroid problem - losing weight

Sebastian (age 17) was diagnosed with a thyroid problem about two years ago. He was always a very long cat and was once 20 pounds, though never really overweight for his size. In the past few years his weight has dropped and he was about 15 pounds when he was first tested for thyroid. He then dropped to 12 pounds and on the medication he has maintained that weight. He lost 1/2 pound this week and is really looking thin around the back hips. Is there any kind of supplement he can take to help him put on a few pounds before the winter sets in. He eats good on some days and not so good on others. He eats a combination of dry (better brand foods) and canned. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I am surprised the vet has kept him on the medication for so long without recommedingan operation to remove the thyroid. My own cat had the same problem, was kept on medication for about three months and then had the op after which is has returned to her normal weight and is back to her happy 16 year old self.

Unfortunately i do not know of any suppliments to try and boost your cats weight, the problem is that if the weight continues to fall off then muscle can also be lost. So if i was you i would ask the vet about the operation and also if they can suggest any food suppliments.

I do hope things work out well for you all, best wishes Kate
