Why does my cat scratch around her water bowl?

My 6 month old calico, name Cali,scratches around her water bowl before drinking from it. Why does she do this?

I'm not really sure but my cat does this too sometimes. I think it is because they can't actually see the surface of the water and are trying to tap it to see it. Unfortunately there aim is not that good and they end up scratching around the bowl.

when my cat goes to his water bowel I often tap the water for him so it ripples and he then sees it and doesn't scratch around.
