Cat Gestation Period
This page is about the cat gestation period or in other words the length of a cats pregnancy.
I know that many cat owners can be very anxious about what to do for their female cat when she gives birth. But to be honest in most cases there really is nothing to do at all. Mother nature will take care of everything.
Your pregnant cat will just inactively know what to do and if things do go wrong, then often just a gentle helping hand from you or a vet will sort things out.
How Long Is the Cat Gestation Period?
The length of the cat gestation period is roughly 9 weeks. Naturally it won't be 9 weeks precisely but anything between 61 to 68 days is a normal time span for the birth of the kittens.
Kittens born before day 56 of a cats pregnancy have a low chance of surviving. they simply won't have developed enough to survive the outside world.
When To Expect the Kittens
Most cat owners won't know exactly when their cat becomes preganant as it often happens outside of the home without the owner witnessing it.
However you will know when your cat is in heat (as there are some very obvious sign), and will notice when this behavior stops. There are also some signs about three weeks after your cat becomes pregnant, such as her nipples becoming pinker and swelling slightly. She may also show signs of becoming more affectionate to you and wanting more food than normal.
The chart below will give you a guide as to when to expect the kittens, given the day you think she may have become pregnant. ( Cat breeders will have more exact dates available to them).

Care Tips
Throughout the cat gestation period you should try to make your pregnant cats life as safe and as comfortable as possible, to make sure that there are no complications.
- Ensure that you feed your cat high quality food and as much as she asks for. Remember she is eating for more than one.
- Do not use a flea treatment on your cat that is not prescribed by your vet. Some flea treatments may harm the unborn kittens.
- make her home life as quiet and as calm as possible. if there are other animals in the home , then make her a separate area where she can get away from them.
- Try not to use to many harsh cleaning chemicals around the home, especially during the later stages of the pregnancy.
