cat hunting habits

My cat eats around a chipmunk a day during the warmer months. Why does she eat only the heads and leave the rest on our doorstep?

Answer by Kate
why they only eat I will never know, I assume it is the tastiest bit (yuk). My cat used to do the same with mice and birds.

As for leaving it at your door, well this often thought to be a sort of gift to you. in the cat world food is everything and so giving you food is a sign of thanks or subservience. Either way it should be looked upon as a nice thing that your cat is trying to do for you.

there is no way to stop a cat from doing this, it is an instinct to hunt. You could try to put a little bell around their neck to warn prey that he is around. we have a cat in the area who is a notorious bird hunter and so she now wears a bell and hopefully that has reduce the amount of birds she catches.
i have a web page about cat hunting behaviour which you may find of further interest here

best wishes Kate

My two cats eat what they catch, however, they do not eat the intestines. I find a neat pile of the digestive system, it looks like it was cut out by a surgeon. How can they do this, eat everything else and leave the innards?
