Cat meowing at night

I have a 5 year old cat. Starting about 6 months ago my cat started this new meowing thing. Whenever I start to get ready for bed, or even go to my bedroom upstairs just to grab something (as long as its during evening or night hours) my cat starts meowing so loudly. He gets very puffy and his belly gets swollen- almost hard. If i poke him he gets really agitated. The meowing is very loud. During the day he doesnt meow EVER. What is he doing this for? Should I continue to ignore it or is there something that needs to be done?

Hi
this sounds like a new habit he has formed as it only happens during the evening. Cats are generally more vocal at night time any way so perhaps he is just following instinct.

i must admit i haven't heard about the belly becoming swollen and hard that does sound rather odd.

I'm afraid only you as the owner will be able to decide whether or not the physical symptoms ie his swollen belly is anything which may need investigating further by a vet. If it only happens for a short period of time while he is meowing and doesn't seem to show any other signs of ill health then this may just be his thing, some cats do have some strange habits.

best wishes Kate
