Keeping a cat safe

by Carol
(UK)

I would love to have a cat of my own, but we live beside a busy road and many village cats have been run over by fast moving vehicles.

Is there any way to teach a cat road sense? I would hate to have to keep her indoors all the time.

The simple and unfortante answer is no you cannot teach a cat not to wander where they like. Thats cats for you.

All I can say is I agree with you I do not like the idea of keeping a cat inside all the time and Indeed have owned many cats throughout my life time in London and I have not lost one on the roads. Lucky who knows I like to think that some cats get road savvy by themselves.

You live near a particually busy road some cat owners in America have decided to build outside enclosures for their cats to wander around. Some have enclosed their whole garden others have built special areas for them. I believe there may even be companies that will build you a custom made outside area, sort of like a large cage with sleeping areas etc, but the thought of a cat in a cage even a large one may not appeal, it doesn't to me, but perhaps it is better than being inside all the time.

best wishes Kate
