Older Cat not making the litter box

by Shannon
(Nebraska)

I have an older cat (17 years old) that can't seem to make it to the litter box anymore. He is pooping on the floor, only 3 feet from the litter box and seems to be doing it regularly. When the litter box is completely fresh, he doesnt seem to do it quite as often, but still happens.

Is this a problem with his age or what?

Thanks.

Well this does depend on whether or not his mobility is ok or not. If he can still get around ok i would say that it is probably more likely to be a behavioral issue rather than an age thing.

Has anything changed recently in the home at all. Or have you changed the litter or moved anything etc. sometimes the samllest thing can cause a cat to display this sort of behavior because they have been stressed by something. Please see my page about middening here https://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-poo.html for more ideas of what the problem could be caused by.
