2 cats both called charlie marching on the spot

i have 2 cats both tabby one is 18months one 6months they get on ok both female not related .they both do this thing on my louge witch is new and they do it on your lap as well .they move there front feet up and down like a marching motion for up to 5min sometimes its strange .is it normal and what are they doing it for i love my charlies but i dont wont my lounge destroyed either any thoughts on this matter????

well it sounds to me like they are either exercising there claws to keep them sharp or they are displaying the kneading action of a kitten on their mums tubby for milk.

if it is the first then a scratching posts etc may help the situation please see my pages here about this issue

If it is the second reason than this is just a natural action which cats normally do on cushions or your lap, it is a sort of contented action. This is instinctual and I can't be stopped per se but if you distract them when they start to do it you may be able to stop them.
