Cats that chew wires

by Zimra Sawyer

I cannot get my two year old Maine coon mix to stop chewing on wires, He has destroyed several pairs of earbuds and wires coming out of my computer, phone wires and an obsession with eating anything plastic. I don't know what to do and I'm at wits end. I have an older cat (12) and he has never given me these kinds of problems.

This sounds to me like the rare behaviour known as PICA. It is a rather strange behaviour where animals eat or chew non food items and wires are usually one of the targets. Unfortunately there is no known cure or even understanding of why this happens. the only thing you can do with animals like this is to try and protect anything that they may try to chew, so wires etc need to be in accessible or covered in a tough protective coat (I believe their are cable covers etc or even insulating tape.

i have a little more information here about Pica on the bottom of this page https://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-eating-disorders.html for you.
Sorry i could not be of more help

Best wishes and a happy New Year kate
