Hi
well your cat is very old now and so it could be several things causing this. It could be age relate ie a weak bladder.
It could be a UTI https://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-urinary-problems.html

It could be a disease such as diabetes which could account for the frequent drinking. feline-diabetes.html

There is no way of knowing what could be causing this without an examination from the vet and possibly some tests. So the sooner you can get your cat to see the vet the better. hopefully it is something the vet can help your cat with with medication.

best wishes kate

my theory

this sounds like a text book case of kidney deterioration: this causes the cat to drink a lot, and urinate frequently.
In turn, they then become very prone to UTIs (urninary tract infection), due to the increase in urination frequency and the grooming that accompanies it.
You can treat the UTI, but there is little you can do about ongoing kidney failure, sadly.
Not that the above is quite common in older cats. Hope this helps! Hannah
