indoor cat wanting out

We have a 11 year old cat that has never been out has been fixed and all of a sudden she throws a fit to go outside.She sits by the door and meows and tries to get out.We have no idea what is going on.Any ideas?

my only thought is that perhaps she has sensed a new cat on the block outside or seen them through a window and she wants to get at them to protect her territory. Cat instincts are very strong and something has obviously triggered one of these in your cat.

I'm not sure what you can do as I have always had cats that have gone outside when they want to. All you can do is to try and make her inside environment as stimulating and full of distractions. See this page for some ideas
