Pollys Stomach

by Lindsay
(Newfoundland)

Hi, my cat , Polly seems to be having problems today, I noticed earlier that her stomach is moving really fast, like she is breathing fast and she has a lack of energy. Her appetite isnt the same also and I dont think she made a bowel movement today. My sister tells me its probably a hairball, which she seems to be trying to cough up early but it really worries me she is like this, and its really hard to get a vet over the weekend or holidays. What should I do? Does this sound really serious to you or does it sound like normal hairballs that just need to pass? I used the hairball remedy on her but she still seems the same. Please let me know what you think I should do?

Hi well it is difficult for me to say either way from your description.

Normally hairballs just cause wrenching and they may also go off their food for a day or so until they can get rid of the hairball. i haven't heard of breathing difficulties etc. personally I would say this sounds like it could be something else but as i am not a vet and so could not possibly try to diagnose this i am unable to say what it could be.

All you can do is to make sure she has plenty of fresh water to drink and to keep her in a comfortable place and if the symptoms persist then you should take her to the vets as soon as possible.

Lets hope it is nothing and that she will be fine tomorrow. cats can have little bugs like the rest of us from time to time.

best wishes Kate
