Cat Hair Loss

Hello! My cat has lost hair just below his stomach. It is the only spot that I can see and I can't detect the problem. Can you please answer my question? I really appreciate your time and help in this regard. Thank you!

Hi
Hair loss can be caused by several things from over grooming caused by stress to a parasite problem.

As a cat owner you need to do two things first check to see if you can see any signs of parasites. Part the fur and see if you can see any signs. Also watch you cat, do they over groom ie wash a lot, do they groom this area more than others. In either case you need to have your cat checked by a vet to have a thorough exmaination, they will be able to do tests to see if there is a skin irritant ie an allergy or a parasite. If neither can be found then you will have to consider that it is caused by stress.

Please also see my web page about fur loss for more information

I hope you discover the cause soon

hair loss

please tell me why my cat looses fur down her back all over her hind end and on her legs right when she goes into heat?

answer by Kate

So sorry i can't i am afraid. Are you sure it is only when she goes into heat or is it a perminent situation?

You should really take her to the vet as soon as possible in case she has a skin problem. The other option could be hormonal but only a vet can tell for sure.

cat loosing its fur

by Jill
(Indiana)

My friends cat has a bare pink tummy, no fur at all on it, and seems to be losing fur on his legs. Also he seems lethargic and a bit thin. The skin on his tummy sags heaps as well. What's wrong with him? Should she take him to vet? She's quite worried about him.

Answer by Kate
Absolutely. this sounds like extreme fur loss and there is definitely something wrong. He may have a parasite on his skin or be allergic to something. either way the vet will probably look through a microscope as some skin cells to see if he can see any parasites etc.

poor cat he does sound rather ill. I do hope he can be made better soon

hair loss

my cat is licking her back legs and by her butt so much that her hair is falling out i was wondering if you could tell me why that was or at least point me in the right direction

Answer by Kate
usually when this behaviour happens in this area it is caused by a parasite or allergy of some sort causing her to be itchy and so encouraging her to over groom.

i have a page about fur loss here for more information https://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-hair-loss.html

What ever it is you really do need to get her seen my a vet who can do some tests to get the right diagnosis and therefore treatment.

Cat hair loss

My holly has a problem she sheds alot and all the time is there something I can give her? or is she lacking something in her diet? Please help!

Answer by Kate
Hi
unfortunately the answer is no there is nothing you can give your cat to prevent hair loss. i know this as I too asked my vet years ago about my own cat who seemed to shed so much I thought she was ill.
unfortunately some cats do just seem to shed more than others. It depends on the type of fur they have.

All you can do is to make sure you are feeding your cat food which helps to keep the fur in top condition and also to spend a few minutes every other day grooming your cat to remove some of the loose hair.

i bought one of those mitts which can be used to groom and when she is on my lap in the evening I just go over her with that. It seems to help as long as I do it regularly.

Cat losing hair under neck. Looks like something is biting her.

by carol oneill
(Pittsfield mass)

I have noticed the past month that my 8 year old female black angora cat, Has sores under her neck. Now the hair is falling out. Appreciate your help.

Answer by Kate
Hi
losing hair can be caused by several things like a skin allergy or a parasite of some sort.

If you have not recently put a new collar on her (which may be causing a skin problem) then it could be some sort of mite.

The only way to really find out what is causing the hair loss and sores is for a vet to do a skin scrape and look at it under a microscope. That way proper medication can be prescribed.

I have a web page here about skin and fur problems like this which you may find of interest.

Cat loosing his hair becoming bald.

My cat is loosing his hair. He keeps cleaning himself non-stop. The bald spots there looks like there are some small scabs. He still is eating and drinking normal. He use to be a long haired cat not anymore. Please help me.. Should I be worried?

Answer by Kate
Bald spots on cats are caused either by stress causing the cat to over groom or by a parasite or skin allergy causing the cat irritation.

the first thing to do is to see if there are any signs of mites or fleas in the fur. If you cannot see anything, the next thing to do is to take them to the vets to have their skin looked at. Sometimes the these mites can be very small in deed and the vet will be able to use special equipment to see them.

If the vet cannot find anything physically wrong then you will have to consider that your cat may be feeling anxious about something and you will have to try and discover what this may be and change it.

I have written a web page about fur loss etc for more information here https://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-hair-loss.html

Hope you can find the problem soon as it must be very distressing for both you and your cat.

best wishes Kate
