cat owner - Cat Litter problem

by Tammy K.

I have 2 house cats. They are both indoor/outdoor cats. We have a basement that is part of the way dug out therefore makes quite the nice "liter box" for them. I have a liter box down there but they insist on urinating and deficating in the dirt. What can I do to stop them from doing this. Are there chemicals I can put down to discourage them? The smell is at times so over powering, it is getting to the point where I cannot stand it anymore.

Thank you,

Tammy K.

All i can say is look at it from your cats point of view. they have instincts to go to the toiklet in gravel and dirt and the baement is just one large peice of dirt. Why wouldn't they use it?
I would strongly recommend that you prevent your cats going down there and move the litter tray somehwere else in the house, perhpas near the back door. Other wise i am sorry to say that there is no way to stop them using the basement as a toilet. if you do put some sort of deterent down there it is liklely that they will stop using the litter tray all togeather.
