Cat seems scared of tail

I have a one year old cat, very friendly and loving. For some reason today out of the blue he seems to be scared of his tail, like it's chasing him or something. At first it was kind of cute but now you can tell that he's really terrified of it and he stares at it just waiting for it to move, then he bites it hard, then takes off running like he's trying to get away from it. I'm starting to get a little worried about it. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Amy

Answer by Kate
it could be that he has been bitten on the tail by an insect which has caused an irritation. Keep an eye on it for a day or so if he continues to do the same it may be worth just getting it checked in case he has an allergy. My own cat would do something simailar and it turned out she was allergic to flea bites. It only took one and it would cause her to go mad running around trying to get away from her back end.

Cat chewed off tail
by: AMY

Hi Kate,

Thank you for writing me back so quickly, unfortnately while I was sleeping last night my cat had chewed the end of his tail off. He chewed off almost 2 inches and when I woke up this morning it looked like a massacre had occured in my house. There was blood all over the place. He is in sugery at the moment and if all goes well he should be able to come home tomorrow night. Thank you for your answer and your concern.

Amy
