My tuxedo cat has a fetish about rubber bands. If he finds one he plays with it and then proceeds to chew and swallow it. Obviously, we keep rubber bands out of his reach. Why does he ingest them?

Hi sounds to me like something called pica. this is a strange disorder that some cats get where they like to eat non food stuffs. Little is known about why this happens.

There is no cure and it is nothing to worry about s long s you continue to keep rubber bands away from him.

I have a page here about cat eating disorders which you may find of further interest.

My shelter-adoptee tuxedo loves to play with rubber bands as well - keeps an assortment of them stashed about the house, bringing them to me for "toss and fetch" games every morning.

Never eats them, just collects. Later in the day his attention shifts to more normal pursuits - window-watching birds and squirrels outside.

His most favorite activities, however, are going for car rides and hiking neighborhood trails.

An unusual fellow!
