Hi
Sounds to me like a case of Middening. this is when a cat uses their poop as a strong scent indicator. This is caused when a cat feel insecure or nervous in a new home. My scent marking it tells other animals that this is their home and also it makes the home smell more like them and this helps to relax them.

It may be an idea to take your cat through some days of litter training using the confinement method. this helps to calm them down and also to get used to the litter tray.

I have a page which contains all this information here

https://www.our-happy-cat.com/cat-poo.html

This problem will ease with time and some tlc. tell your husband not to worry this is only a temporary issue.
