Cat won't use scratching post

Our former outdoor tabby has been in my apartment for the past 6 months and is content. I'm just wondering why she doesn't have any interest in using the scratching post I purchased a long time ago? She always would scratch on trees before. Now she just pulls on the carpet with her claws although it isn't damage it. Maybe spray the post with catnip or just not worry? She leaves furniture alone.

Simple answer is just don't worry about it. not all cats like scratching posts and as your cat was not brought up with one he may not recognize it for what it is, being more used to trees etc.

i really wouldn't worry too much.

have you thought about getting one of those flat scratching mats? This could be a good as it will help to keep your cats claws short and as he likes to use the carpet he may find this easier to get used to. it could be a lot cheaper than having to get his claws trimmed every few months.

i think there is an example of one of these mats on my page here
