Caterwauling

I have a cat that just started bellowing out deep loud meows like what you call caterwauling. She has never been a noisy cat but for the past 2 days she will just walk from one end of the house to the other doing this. It sounds so sad and pathetic, but i can't seem to figure out whats ailing her. She has been licking her genital area alot so i thought maybe she gonna be in heat soon. Can this be the cause of it, if so is there anything i can do to make her stop? Would spaying/neutering her fix this? I am so confused and a little sleep deprived.

Hi yes this sounds like a cat in heat and yes having her spayed will stop this behavior.
