cats don't like each other any more after vet trip

by June

I have two male british shorthair cats, they have lived together quite happily until I took one of them to the vets. We were out of the house no more than 30 minutes. When we came back I put the cat back into the room were they both normally are but the other one seems to have taken a dislike to his brother. He started howling and growling and spitting at his brother. They have never shown this behavior before. We have had them for three years. At the moment we are having to keep them apart. Do you have any suggestions as to how we can get them back together. They are both house cats.

Hi
yes this is a common problem. basically your cat is afraid of the other cat because he may smell of the vets office etc. it is called aggression trauma.

I would keep the cats apart for a day or so then i would start to re introduce them slowly using the introduction process described here

It may seem like a long process but is really worth it to ensure that your cats return to a normal happy relationship again with each other.

best wishes kate
