Cats not getting along.

We recently got a new kitten hoping it would be a good companion for our 1 1/2 year old cat.

Well for most of the time the cat HATES the kitten! Now as everyone knows the kitten is very playful and likes to bite and claw sometimes. Well when the cat wants to be left alone and the kitten comes over to "attack" him of course the cat will freak out a bit and swipe the kitten very hard a few times in his poor head. And sometimes it seems like out of no where the cat gets in a growly mood and will hit the kitten in the head even if hes not doing anything.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do to help these 2 get along. We certainly don't want the kitten to feel scared in her home and we don't want the cat to feel always defensive all the time.
P.S.. has anyone ever heard of a cat acting different after certain foods? Sometimes ive noticed after we give the cat a small treat of wet food we find him growling and grumpy. Now I don't know if im just stretching for a reason for his moods or its just a Coincidence.
Thanks
Janie

hi can i recommend that you take a look at my page about how to introduce cats to each other. it is a slow process and does take some time and patience but is worth it in the end. However there are never any guarantees that the two will ever be best friends.

here is the page
