dried crap in kittens ears

Just got this baby kitty and his ears were really dirty when we got him so we cleaned them out it was yicky looks like dirt or maybe dried mucus. We thought we got them clean but tonight he had more so what is it. We thought he just came from a dirty home but now not for sure
