"Fraidy" Cat

My daughter has a female cat who is what I call a "fraidy" cat. She is very afraid of people's feet and will run away if they get close. She will come if I call her or mimick cat sounds. When we do pet her, she purrs loudly. Today, I was able to pick her up and she purred loudly, but I could tell she was uncomfortable and wanted to get down (which I let her do!). I thought when cats purred, it was a sign of contentment. Am I wrong? Does purring mean something else?

Cats also purr when they are in pain or afraid also.
A cat who doesn't struggle when you pick them up and purrs is usually happy to be there.

I have a page about scared and nervous cats which you might find of further interest here
