Is it a furball?

Yesterday our 1 1/2y.o. male cat seemed like he wanted to spit up a hairball. Although nothing as been produced yet, he seems to make this odd clicking noise in his throat, and his meow seems low and hoarse..he is a talker..

He is eating, acting his regular self, I saw him eat, but can't seem to identify what the problem is. He is an indoor/outdoor cat.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
well it is quite possible that he does have a hairball as they are very common. Sometimes it can take a few days or even a week or so to shift the hairball and bring it up.

Keep an eye on him to see if other symptoms occur or not, also if he is still showing signs of discomfort and or irritation in his throat for longer than a week then take him to the vets. Sometimes a hairball need help to come up.

The other possibility is that there is something caught in his throat like a small bone but this is a lot rarer and it is likely he would shows signs of distress and stop eating etc.

Lets hope that nature takes it's course and if there is a hairball that it comes up by itself.

i have a page about cat hairballs which you might find of further interest here
